kailash Fisheries and Aquatics/ Kailash Fish Hatchery is one of the prominent and largest fish hatchery complex located in Astapura in (Betnoti Block) of Mayurbhanj district, Odisha. Initially, during year 2001, it started functioning with the fish seed rearing as a challenge and started producing fry in one acre pond by bringing spawn from Bankura in West Bengal. The project was further developed with financial assistance from State Bank of India. In the first year, it made an income of Rs.5 lakh. In 2003, another two acres of water area was added to the project and able to sold six tonnes of fry with a profit of Rs.15 lakh. The project was further expanded by constructing more tanks under Fish Farmers’ Development Agency of the Mayurbhanj district, Odisha. Presently, this Hatchery used to breed about 26 varieties of fish along with Scampi (M. rosenbergii). The scampi hatchery was started in 2007. It also produces seeds of Magur, Chittala, Koi, various carp species and some other indigenous species which have excellent demand locally & high market value. Now, Kailash Hatchery produces 250 lakh spawn, 100 lakh fry and 60 tonnes of fingerlings/ yearlings annually. It supplies fingerling and yearlings to the farmers throughout the year. It has also supplied spawns/fingerlings to different states of India.
The Unit has 100 acres of rearing ponds for seed production and engaged 50 regular employees. Another 100 daily wage labourers also find work in the farm based on demand. Being the proprietor of the Hatchery, Akshya Kumar Sahu, has been awarded by the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Odisha as the best progressive farmer in State Agriculture fair in 2011 and the National Fisheries Development Board, Hyderabad has awarded the progressive farmers award during the World Fisheries Day celebration held at Patna in 2018. The ICAR- Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture inaugurated its 4th Aquaculture Field School (AFS) at Kailash Hatchery, Baisinga, Mayurbhanj, Odisha on 24th July, 2017. The AFS was inaugurated by Sri. Gokul Chandra Pati, IAS, Former Secretary, DAHD&F, Govt. of India and Chief Secretary, Government of Odisha in presence of Sri. Gagan Kumar, Dhal, IAS, Agriculture Production Commissioner, Government of Odisha and Dr. J. K. Sundaray, Director, ICAR-CIFA, Bhubaneswar. ICAR-CIFA through its Agri-Business Incubation center (ABI) for providing further technical support by facilitating exchange of knowledge between scientists and entrepreneurs. Kailash hatchery has entered in to a MoU on 07th September, 2016 with CIFA to further upgrade technology of the farm. The farm is recognized as AFS by ICAR-CIFA and technical support provided by ABI-CIFA.The main objective of the AFS is to produce technical manpower in the field of fisheries and also enhance the technical knowledge of the existing farmers & hatchery operators.
The AFS once utilized on regular basis will produce a good no. of Human resources. Further, the Hatchery is running an Aqua shop for one stop solution to farmers by supplying fish seed, inputs like fish feed, fertilizer, fish medicines, chemicals etc. Apart from these, the National Fisheries Co-operative Federation of Govt. of India (FISHCOPFED) has opened an Aqua One Centre (AOCs) funded by NFDB at the premises of Kailash Hatchery. This Aqua One Centre (AOCs) will provide the farm advisory services to the fish farmers, water quality testing in fish pond, fish disease monitoring and diagnosis etc. to the farmers. The Annual turnover of the farm is more than 2 crores and the fish farmers of Odisha, West Bengal and adjoining states are greatly benefited out of the facility of Kailash Hatchery. Students, Scientist, Researchers, Farmers, Hatchery Operators, Young Entrepreneurs, visit the hatchery & farm and get ample benefits and its activity.
